SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- As students get ready to head back to school, Union College is being proactive about safety to ensure that students are safe while living and studying on campus.

Emergency crews in Schenectady joined in a drill to evaluate the college's preparedness and the response of area emergency organizations to a campus disaster.

Organizers said scenarios ranged from shots being fired on campus to a possible hazardous chemical spill.

Emergency Management Director Tom Constantine said, "There's been different levels of drills on college campuses with the police and fire department for the last 10 or 20 years. It was just our decision to further enhance this at this step because the students are not on campus at the time."

College administrators said they do meet regularly to review the college's emergency response plan. It includes procedures to ensure a rapid response to an unanticipated emergency or threatening situation.

Classes for the fall term at Union College begin on Wednesday, Sept. 9.
