"There's a basic application, and once a family chooses to enroll their son or daughter, we would welcome them," said Troy Prep Principal Paul Powell.

And after that, this new school began its new school year. Like anything that's a little different, there's a world of opportunity that's created.

"One of things we believe here at Troy Prep is high expectations, both in academics and behavior, so our teachers and our students strive everyday to meet that bar," said Powell.

But amid these expectations, there's also time for a little fun.

"One of the best ways for students to learn and remember things is to have fun while doing it, so it's common for students to sing songs and remember multiplication facts, sing chants, to talk about virtues and what it means to be a student at Troy Prep," said Powell.

While learning in the classroom is a typical part of a student's day here at the Troy Prep Charter School, it's more than just reading, writing, and arithmetic. Character and integrity are also part of the lesson plan.

"We want our students to have a good idea what's right and wrong is in the school. We know our families teach that at home, and we think we should reinforce that at school as well." said Powell.

Troy Prep is part of the network of uncommon schools, others are in Brooklyn and New Jersey. But regardless of location, the focus is always college prep. Although the students may only be in middle school, the thought here is it's never too early.

"We want to start comparing our students for that now, both what it takes as far as knowledge as well as the skills," said Powell.
