Getting your child to sleep

By: Marcie Fraser

"I have parents on the verge of divorce. The parents are stressed. They are not getting enough sleep," said Dr. Roger Green

Pediatric sleep expert Dr. Roger Green says there are several ways to get kids to sleep one popular method is called the Ferber Full Extinction method where the child is allowed to 'cry it out', it's a tough method to do right.

β€œThe problem is most people who try the extinction method do not do it properly. They just put their child in bed and let them cry and sort of at a random fashion. Or they do it a couple of times and the child is crying and they finally go in the room and get their kid out,” said Green.

Most parents don't follow through on the Ferber method because they believe that if they let the child cry, it could cause psychological damage.

"It doesn't cause any psychological damage to the children and many researchers have looked at parents who have stuck to the proper use of the extinction method and so far every study ever been done on that not a single child who's undergone this treatment has gone to at least appear less happy or less secure after they have for thorough extinction,” said Green.

When trying any method, be sure the child is truly tired and ready for bed.

"Does the child look so sleepy at night that they actually are ready to fall asleep because if you try to doesn't two hours before their normal natural bed time, you are wasting your time and you are doing at least to yourself and maybe to your child," Green said.

If you are a parent and reading books to see how much time you baby needs to sleep. The average book says about ten hours. According to Dr. Green, stop reading books, stop talking to friends, every baby is different.

Some babies need just seven hours of sleep others need ten, and what's best ? Family bed or baby in their own room? Experts say, no way is better, it's up to the parents.

"Today what is called co-sleeping. I have no problems with that and so do most pediatric sleep specialists, it's natural and normal. I will tell you three out of four mothers, of my patients will tell me that it was a disaster, they regret it. It led to the child being stuck in their bed and the child being very unhappy. The child waking up several times at night placing stress on the marriage,” said Green.
