ALBANY, N.Y. -- Farms and businesses affected by the closure of the Lake Champlain Bridge will now be able to receive assistance from the state.
Governor Paterson said the creation of a nearly $3 million economic assistance program will include grants and loans to small businesses for payroll and other expenses, as well as money for farms and manufacturers to cover increased travel costs.
The bridge, which connects Crown Point, N.Y. and Addison, Vt., was closed on Oct. 16 after it was deemed unsafe for drivers due to problems with the foundation. Transportation officials said the bridge cannot be renovated and must be replaced.
A report recently prepared for the Department of Transportation says it will take two years and $67 million to replace the bridge.
The new assistance program will be administered by the Empire State Economic Development Corp.
