ESSEX COUNTY, N.Y. -- Construction on a ferry to temporarily transport commuters until the Champlain Bridge is replaced could start this week.
Originally, the new ferry was set to be built in Ticonderoga. Now we're told the new ferry will be located 1,000 feet south of the existing bridge in Crown Point.
According to Vermont Transportation Agency, the first phase of the project will be to build a road that can handle cars, trucks and farm equipment. The next phase will involve building a docking system for the boat itself.
The Champlain Bridge was closed October 16th after it failed to pass an underwater inspection. The closure left more than 3,000 drivers who use the bridge between Crown Point and Addison, Vermont with few transportation options.
Both New York and Vermont are working together on the new ferry project.
There is no word on how soon service could start.
