CROWN POINT, N.Y. -- A report prepared for the Department of Transportation says it will take two years and $67 million to replace the Lake Champlain Bridge.
The bridge connecting Crown Point, N.Y. and Addison, Vt., was closed on Oct. 16 after it was declared unsafe for drivers due to problems with the foundation.
An assessment by HNTB New York Engineering and Architecture determined that a short-term fix would cost $22.9 million but would only extend the bridge's life span by four or five years.
Since the closure, officials from New York and Vermont have been scrambling to find alternative ways across the lake for the thousands of people who crossed the bridge daily.
A toll-free hotline number for information about the bridge closure - 1-888-769-7243 - will remain open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Those calling from the 518 area code may dial 518-485-1159.
