AMSTERDAM, N.Y. -- When his wife was diagnosed with stage three ovarian cancer, Daniel Weaver wanted to make sure he was there every step of the way.

"I did not believe she was going to make it and I wanted to spend a lot of time with her," Weaver said.

That's when Weaver decided to close down his business. He owns the Book Hound, the only book store in Amsterdam. The shop is well known for its rare antique books that go as far back as the 1600s.

"The people that have been disappointed that I was closing, I must have had also about 100 people there that I've never seen before," said Weaver.

After six years on hiatus and now that his wife is cancer free, Weaver is giving it another shot and opening up once again. The shop is on East Main Street and word of its arrival has quickly spread.

"I'm excited about it because I'm an avid book reader," said one resident.

Weaver says he knows the economy is not how it used to be the first time around, but he's willing to take the risk.

"People have to step up to the plate and open businesses, use their own money and not wait for the government to do it if they want the economy to recover," said Weaver.

"We've very happy that they are here. It brings more people downtown and I wish more stores would open up here," said business owner Philomena Lorio.

Weaver says despite the bad economy, he knows business will be okay. He says his wife's courageous battle with cancer is what inspired him to try again in the first place.
