FLORIDA, MA -- The town of Florida is a tiny community of only about 800 residents tucked away in northern Berkshire County. But the people running the town have a big idea.
"I believe it's 24 wind turbines that they want erected on Crum Hill and Bakke Mountain," said Florida Town Administrator Christine Dobbert.
"We're trying to make sure that the entire process is done correctly. It's going a little slower than probably the majority of the people hoped, but we're headed in the right direction and it looks like it's going to happen, hopefully, in the near future," said Florida highway superintendent Glen Burdick.
A plan is in place for one town to install enough wind turbines to churn out enough power for about 9,000 homes. But as Ryan Burgess tells us, no matter how you spin it, not everyone is in favor of the plan.
"I would love to see it go through. I think it would be good economically for the town. And everybody right now is looking for alternate sources of energy and this is certainly an alternate source. The wind up here is constant and it would certainly help with not being so dependent on other resources," said Dobbert.
The town says installing these turbines would be a great way for people to lower their carbon footprint. But there's at least one group of people here in the town who oppose the project.
"I think they had a problem with where they're going to be located, if they're going to generate noise, and if their property was going to be devalued," said Burdick.
Calls have been made to one group who opposed the plan, but for now, they haven't been returned. Town officials say in spite of the opposition, the turbines are a positive spin on energy use.
"Everybody's worried about global warming and here is the little town of Florida that's just trying to do what's right and use the resources we have," said Burdick.
Natural resources that this town hopes will start churning out power soon.
