ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - Campgrounds operated by the state Department of Environmental Conservation will officially open for the season on Friday.
Each year, millions of people visit DEC campgrounds in the Adirondacks and Catskills. Reservations this year have soared, with an increase of more than 15 percent over last year.
According to ReserveAmerica, about 39,000 camping reservations have been taken for DEC facilities for the upcoming 2008 camping season.
DEC operates 52 campgrounds and seven day-use areas in the Adirondack and Catskill Forest Preserves. Sites range from $16 to $22 a night.
