AMSTERDAM, N.Y. -- A plan to convert the old Chalmers building in Amsterdam into luxury apartments is coming under scrutiny.
The deal was supposed to revitalize the city's southside while saving the old Chalmers mill. But in an editorial, the Amsterdam Recorder is calling on the city to raze the building.
All of this comes as the city council gets ready to vote on a plan to give developer Uri Kaufman a one-year option on the property.

Kaufman's plan could bring as many as 200 apartments to the site as well as retail outlets.
Earlier this year, the building was destined for the wrecking ball. The city even has a $1.4 million grant to take it down. But Mayor Ann Thane said the city is better off with the development and the state money will still be able to be used on the project.
Council members are expected to meet behind closed doors later tonight to discuss the finances of the deal and then vote on whether to move forward at their regularly scheduled meeting.
