ALBANY, N.Y. -- It is day two of the Tulip Festival in Washington Park and crowds of people are expected to head to the festivities. On the agenda for Saturday: the coronation of the new queen who is UAlbany senior Sarah Volk.
Friday, the windmill floating on the lake in Washington Park went up in flames. It was all part of the show and it was really something to see. The windmill went up like a bonfire, then it revealed the ""Fire Tulip" for the first time.
"Great, incredible, that thing was awesome, the windmill coming down like that," said Albany resident Mark Clemens.
It is day two of the Tulip Festival in Washington Park and crowds of people are enjoying the festivites. However, putting on such an extravagant festival required a lot of planning. Kaitlyn Ross has more from Washington Park now on what kind of leg work goes into the celebration.
"It's something new and unique. I think it's always good to add additional events that attract people, keep it fresh and new definitely," said Jennifer Viggiani.
Based on the reactions of the crowd, it looks like the "Fire Tulip" may become a permanent part of the festival.
Tulip Festival honors Albany's Dutch heritage, and some 80,000 people are expected to attend this weekend.
Organizers said it took months and hundreds of volunteers to make it happen.
If you're planning to join in the fun, beward that parking will be difficult. Organizers say there are several options for parking including the Empire State Plaza and the east garage downtown as well as the Elk Street lot and the Eagle Street garage.
