CAPITAL REGION, N.Y. -- We have a check scam to tell you about. Waterford town police say you should be wary of receiving any checks from Star Capital in Missouri.
Police say a Waterford resident received a letter and a check equaling almost $5,000. The letter said the recipient had won $125,000. The letter also goes on to say that the receiver must call before cashing the check, noting that the sole purpose of the check is to pay the government taxes on the big winnings.
Police did call the claim agent on the letter and he hung up.
