ALBANY, N.Y. -- A 10-year-old Albany girl is dead after she was shot outside her home.
Albany police said Kathina Thomas was shot in the back by a stray bullet while she was playing outside her First Street home around 8 p.m. Thursday. She was a student at Sheridan Prep.
Police said this was not a drive-by shooting, and they are still searching for the person responsible. They spent much of the night going door to door in the neighborhood, looking for anyone who had any information.
Some neighbors we caught up with said they're sick of the random violence.
A 10-year-old girl was shot and killed while playing on the sidewalk in front of her Albany home Thursday evening. Our Kaitlyn Ross and has more from the scene.
Albany resident Yvonne Lynn said, "I'm fighting back the tears because, I mean...I don't have words to say, you know. It's hard for me to comprehend that a 10-year-old was just shot down and killed. For what? What was the reason? I don't have words."
Albany's Democratic 5th Ward Leader Johnsie Ingram said, "I've spoken to a couple officers, a guy on the force 24, 26 years, he said this is the worst they've ever seen it, because the kids just keep getting younger and younger. I want that killer caught ASAP."
So far police tell us there are few leads, and they're not sure how many shots were fired in the area. No other injuries have been reported.
Anyone with information should call the Detective Office at 462-8039.
