Brewery in Saratoga Springs to expand

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- Paul McErlean, Master Brewer at the Olde Saratoga Brewing Company, said, "In a lot of people's eyes, beer is a casual fun drink."

They certainly have a lot of it at the Olde Saratoga Brewing Company, but producing anywhere from 50,000 and 80,000 bottles of beer a day isn't cutting it. The Brewery wants to add on a 5,500 square foot warehouse to it's facility to be more efficient.

"We're growing and our operating costs are going up, so the more efficient we can be, the more we can continue to grow, and make profit," said General Manager Bob Craven.

Which is tough, considering the current market in the beer business. The cost of hops and barley malt, both used to make beer, have gone up more than double in the past year.

Brewery in Saratoga Springs to expand
As the price of consumer goods continues to rise across the nation, one brewery is taking an interesting spin on ways to deal with the ever increasing cost of production. As our Kaitlyn Ross tells us, the Olde Saratoga Brewing Company is expanding their business to save money.
McErlean said, "It's quite a drastic change for the industry, especially for people who can't afford to buy the hops anymore."

In order to keep on bottling the brew, the company had to raise the price of a six pack by about a dollar, but don't expect their fans will have an issue with the increase.

Craven said, "We have a good following of friends and people who come to the tasting room pretty regularly, then they bring friends."

The breweries business also increases in the summer months when more tourists come through the spa city, but that also means more traffic, which is why they're hoping to get a jump start on construction.
Craven said, "The earlier we can get started the better, there's just so much traffic and congestion in Saratoga in the summer!"

The Brewing Company will find out the fate of their expansion project Wednesday night. The planning board has their warehouse development on the agenda for their meeting.
