STAMFORD, N.Y. -- A Delaware County man is dead after a standoff with State Police.

Troopers said Dale Rossman, 41, got in an argument with a woman at her home in Grand Gorge at around 5 p.m. Thursday and shot her in the abdomen when she tried to leave the house.

Police said Rossman fled the scene and drove to his home about eight miles away in Stamford, where trooper patrols spotted him.

Police said he refused to stop and continued driving to his house, where he got out of his vehicle armed with a handgun and began shooting. Troopers then returned fire, hitting Rossman in the leg.

At the same time, police said Rossman shot himself in the head and was killed.

The woman police said he shot, Connie Merwin, 35, was flown to Albany Medical Center, where she was listed in stable condition late Thursday.
