ALFRED, N.Y. -- A toy gun causes a Southern Tier university to go into lockdown. Police said it is likely a group of students were playing a game on the Alfred University campus in Allegany County. But the toy gun quickly sent rumors of a real gunman on campus and the school went into lockdown.

The university alerted students and faculty about the situation through text messages.

Police went door-to-door, searching every building on the 230-acre campus. Though the weapon turned out to be fake, the university said its emergency alert system worked.

A game involving a toy gun on the Alfred University campus sent the school into lockdown earlier Tuesday evening.

"If there's anything happy about a situation like this it's that we got a test of our safety procedures and we believe the test with flying colors," said University President Charles Edmondson.

Police located the student who had the toy gun. They said they will not press any charges.
