New information in Troopergate
Updated: 10/08/2007 09:09 PM

It appears the partisan rift between Governor Spitzer and Majority Leader Joe Bruno may be getting even wider. New York Daily News reporter Liz Benjamin is reporting that Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver is encouraging the Governor to form a commission to investigate and serve subpoenas to members of Majority Leader Joe Bruno's staff.
Silver apparently wants the Governor to use his power to appoint a Moreland commission. Now, that's- basically a group with the power to investigate whatever the Governor directs. The Assembly Speaker said it would be fair retaliation for the Senate's insistence on issuing subpoenas to investigate the Governor's office when it comes to Troopergate.
New information in Troopergate
There's word today that state police were documenting Senator Joe Bruno's helicopter use long before Governor Spitzer's two aides were accused of improperly using law enforcement to track his travels.
This news comes as the Times Union is reporting that Majority Leader Bruno's travels were being monitored by state police long before Spitzer took office. The TU report showed travel itineraries from 2004 and 2006, when Bruno traveled to New York City by state police helicopter and also used state troopers as drivers.
The Attorney General's office said this news wouldn't change its findings that Bruno did not break any laws in his use of state transportation. The AG's report did find possible abuse of power in the Governor's office, but nothing illegal. The Albany County District Attorney also found no criminal wrongdoing in his investigation. The investigation by the state public integrity commission, which is the former state ethics commission, is still ongoing.
