ALBANY, N.Y. -- "I've said over the last 11 years that the Democrats would not take over," said State Senator Neil Breslin.
But now, Breslin says he sees his party, the Democrats, securing the Senate next year and that potential takeover takes him out of the race for retiring Represenative Mike McNulty's seat in Congress.
"Ive been around here long enough here to establish some senority which I wouldn't have in the house of representatives," said Breslin.
Breslin says running was tempting, and it made sense.
Eleven years in the senate and a family who is deeply involved in Albany County Politics.
Democrat Neil Breslin has been in the state senate for 11 years and now sees a chance for his party to takeover.
But, after meeting with Democratic leaders and seeing the number of close statewide Senate races that could potentially put Dems in charge he sees a chance to make positive change.
"Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. The Republicans have really run it is as dictators. We will pass legislation that will be good for the state. There wont be the gridlock and the dysfunction," Breslin claimed.
So, now the conversation for congress moves on without Breslin.
Schenectady Mayor Brian Stratton, Albany Mayor Jerrry Jennings, Hillary Clinton Aide Tracey Brooks, and Schenectady County Legislator Susan Savage are all possibilities for the Democrats.
Breslin says he wouldn't be surprised if there was a primary...
"There's an entity in Schenectady and an entity in Albany so it might be harder to come up with one single candidate and agree on it," Breslin said.
The last time Democrats ran the Senate was in 1965 and that lasted all of one year.
