Have a trip to Italy planned this summer? Besides loading up your wallet with Euros, you might want to pack your Capri pants, because Capri is a glamorous seaside retreat.
Famous first as an island retreat for Roman emperors who built fantastic villas, and later discovered by creative types who found inspiration from the island's beauty, the craggy island of Capri is Italy's version of the Garden of Eden.
Dripping with as many tourists as flowers in the summer, it has an essence so sweet they have literally bottled it; “Fiori di Capri.” Other native products include limoncello from the lemon groves and home-made gelato. Just 40 minutes by hydrofoil from Naples, Capri is a favorite day trip for visitors who all eventually wind up fighting for elbow room on the piazzetta, the epicenter crowded with sidewalk cafes and expensive boutiques.
Still a magnet for the jet set, Capri's jaw-dropping scenery is the draw, whether you are circling the limestone island by boat, motoring through its coves and grottos, or walking through its many paths and hidden alleyways.
The famous getaway island for Roman emperors now draws flocks of tourists to its scenic vistas. Valarie D’Elia filed the following ‘Travel With Val’ report.
Perhaps the most stunning view is two miles above Capri Town, in a town called Anacapri, which can be reached by bus or chairlift.
