Most people would think buying a ceiling fan is a breeze, but there is a lot to know if you want to find the best one for your home. A ceiling fan is a great energy efficient way to keep your home cool. We stopped by Home Depot for some tips to keep you in the loop when it comes to ceiling fans.
It’s most important that you buy a fan that fits the room and any sales rep can help you figure that out. You also need to make sure it’s made well or it won't last.
“You want to look at the quality of the fan. On the cheaper side, fan motors are going to come made in plastic, they’re going to wobble, they’re not going to give you the benefits that you really need, so you’re going to look for something that’s got a metal casing in your motor, you’re going to look for wood blades versus a plastic blade. You’re just going to look for an overall quality, good sturdy ceiling fan,” says Home Depot Department Supervisor Fred Adler.
The blades are the only thing that should move. If the motor shakes or rattles, move on. A good fan should also be silent.
Next, look at the pitch or the tilt of the blades. The greater the pitch the more air the fan will move as it spins. Also know the height of your ceilings so you buy the proper mount.
Most people would think buying a ceiling fan is a breeze, but there is a lot to know if you want to find the best one for your home. A ceiling fan is a great energy efficient way to keep your home cool.
“Basically there are two types of mounts. You've got a flush mount and you've got a mount with a down rod,” says Adler. “A down rod is just a steel rod that extends the fan downward from your ceiling. The size or height of your ceiling will determine your down rod. You will want at least five, six, maybe a seven-inch clearance between your ceiling and the fan blades.”
You should consider your lighting needs and make sure the fan is compatible. You may also want one with a remote control or a reverse option, which is great for keeping hot air down during the winter.
The only thing you need to do to take care of your fan is to give it a good cleaning on a regular basis. If too much dust builds up on the blades or even in the motor it won’t run efficiently and it can circulate that dust throughout your home.
And last, never use an indoor fan outside. It’s dangerous. An outdoor fan has a special casing to protect it from the elements, so check the box.
Once you get wind of how much a ceiling fan will save you on your energy bill, you’ll definitely be a fan.
