If you are a parent of a child who is overweight, helping them lose weight can be a challenge. Expect it not only to take time, but patience.
"It takes a lot of cooperation for everyone in the family and it also takes a lot of patience. The most difficult part was trying to limit the amount of food, the portion sizes," said Lynda Garreau.
We first we met Lynda Garreau and her six-year-old daughter, Selena, in January. Selena was thirty pounds overweight. Her health was at risk.
"Childhood diabetes, type two diabetes, hypertension, coronary artery disease, early death," said Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Greg Rys.
After the first few months, we checked in with Selena and found out she had gained six pounds. So she was told she had to snack less and exercise more.
It's been five months now and for this visit, it's time for blood work.

"Thyroid numbers were normal, so there is no metabolic reason for this. It's just a matter of over eating and not exercising,” said Rys. "Her triglycerides, which are the fatty acids were 190, they should definitely be below a100 for someone her age, so they were quite high, that puts her at a higher risk of diabetes."
Her blood work isn't good but there is some improvement. Selena has been exercising more and snacking less. One concern I had was how much influence I, as a reporter, might be having on her progress or lack of it, because of the attention she is getting from the TV interviews.
"She feels like a super star. It is not a bad thing. She got a new out fit every time, she'd get a special something, not treats, but also got to do more active things with us, it worked," her mom said.
According to the medical charts, Selena needs to lose another twenty-five pounds to be within normal weight range and in order for her to do that, every day she will have to monitor what she eats and her exercise.
"It's going to be an on going event. We are going to be stick with it. We have all changed our wellness routine. I have even joined the gym. We are going to stick with it."
