Blue Friday in the Capital Region
02/10/2006 02:26 PM
By: Scott Patterson

One by one cars pull into DeNooyer Chevrolet in Colonie actually happy to see dozens of flashing lights.

"A lot of people don't realize what local police, state police and corrections go through to keep the public safe," said Middleburgh Resident Steve Humphrey

Blue Friday is the brainchild of WGNA radio's morning team of Sean McMaster and Richie Phillips.

The event came together last year as the Capital Region continued to mourn the deaths of Albany Police Lieutenant John Finn and Schenectady Police Officer Eric Verteramo.

McMaster said,"I just thought maybe we'll just do a day where everybody wears blue and shows support, and while we were sitting there in the meeting it just snowballed. We could get blue carnations and sell that and we can donate it."

The money collected from these carnation sales as well as the sales of these shirts will go to the COPS organization, which provides assistance to family members of police officers killed in the line of duty.

C.O.P.S. 2nd Vice President Pete Frisoni said, "They go through a very traumatic event, and it continues long after the funerals, and we need to support them throughout their lives, especially when children are involved."

Brenda Matthews has a number of friends in law enforcement.

Blue Friday
Blue Friday is an event throughout the Capital Region to raise money and honor law enforcement.

She said, "I can't imagine what it would do to their families if they lost somebody. So it's nice to have a fund together to help out those families."

The event raised more than $11,000.

This is the second Blue Friday and this year it featured a second location in Wilton and also an expanded focus.

C.O.P.S. President Pat Fox said, "We expanded a little bit further now to honor all police officers killed in the line of duty, but also to honor all of the guys and the girls that are still working out on the job now."

And with every car that comes through...

"It shows the fact that people really do appreciate us," said Fox.
