The White House has issued condolences to the family of an American who was beheaded in Iraq -- and is vowing to hunt down his killers.

An apparent videotape of Nick Berg's beheading has aired on a website with ties to al-Qaida.

White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan said the tape shows the "true nature of the enemies of freedom." He said those responsible have "no regard for the lives of innocent men, women and children."

McClellan said the Bush administration is determined to bring justice to Berg's killers. He said, "Our thoughts and prayers are with his family."

McClellan made his comments in Arkansas, where President Bush is on a campaign visit to spotlight education policies.
