By: Capital News 9 Staff

A national drug company is pulling its birth control product off the shelves, questioning its effectiveness.

Lunelle is given as an injection once a month. The drug company, Pharmacia Corporation has issued a voluntary recall saying women who have used Lunelle are at risk of becoming pregnant.

Planned Parenthood in Albany has prescribed the pre-filled syringes. They're encouraging patients to contact them with questions.

Marta Allen, Director of Planned Parenthood said, "We offer free pregnancy tests to anyone who was on Lunelle. And they need to make sure they are not pregnant. And they need, the time they're due for their next Lunelle shot to change their method of birth control."

The drug company is only recalling the syringes, not the vials of Lunelle.

Their expecting to eventually have the contraceptive back on the market.
