New bill could allow police to auction unclaimed items via the internet

By: AP Wire Service

BOSTON (AP) -- A bill sitting on Governor Deval Patrick's desk could allow Massachusetts Police Departments to use the internet to auction off unclaimed items.

Under current law, State Police Departments can hold auctions to make money off unclaimed property in police custody.

The new bill would allow departments to hold auctions with the use of the internet, which would expand reach for the auction, and bring in more bidders.

Items for bid would be things in police possession for more than a month after attempting to contact the owner.
