Gloversville mayor faces competition for his seat

By: Dayana Perez

GLOVERSVILLE, N.Y. -- Meet Dirk Myers. He's a businessman, who manages the Bow Tie Movie Land in downtown Schenectady. He also helped open up Jillian's in Albany a couple of years ago. Now, he says he wants to add another duty to his list -- becoming the next mayor of the City of Gloversville.

"I don't think the current mayor has been attentive and done the things that need to be done to this city," Myers said.

Myers is a republican and is one of four candidates who hope to run against first term mayor Tim Hughs. He says he wants to promote the city, improve downtown and bring more businesses in.

"We need to have a mayor who's accessible, a mayor who is visible and someone out there who's promoting the city," Myers said.

Democrat and former city historian Judy Marcoux agrees.

"The mayor needs to keep regular office hours. We do not need a part time mayor. This is a full time position," said Marcox.

Marcoux announced her candidacy last week. She says the city needs a mayor who will help ease the tax burden.

"Our tax burden is very high. We need to cut expenses without cutting services. I'm not a politician number one. One a business woman. I know how to manage money. I know how to do budgets. I work well with people. I've been in the field for 30 years," Marcoux said.

Mayor Tim Hughs says he welcomes the competition. He's seeking re-election because he wants to continue working on the projects that began under his watch.

"There was a Wal-Mart Supercenter that was proposed and previous administration started it and I'd like a chance to finish it. We're getting close at this point. We are also working on revenue sharing with the town of Johnstown." Said Hughs.

Two other people are also running for the city's top spot -- republicans Dayton King and Todd Grandshaw.

As petitions begin to circulate, the City of Gloversville is prepared to listen to each candidate as they make their case.
