Small earthquake reported in Albany County

By: Kaitlyn Ross

NEAR BERNE, N.Y. -- The U.S. Geological Survey confirms a magnitude 3.0 earthquake on the Saffir-Simpson intensity scale --was centered near South Berne -- around 9 p.m. Sunday night. Google maps pinpoints this location near the intersections of county routes 1 and 3. The quake was felt 10-15 miles or more away from the epicenter and there are no reports of any damage.

People reported feeling the earthquake in Schenectady, Albany and points in between. A magnitude 3.0 is a very weak earthquake --- it's not felt by many but certainly enough to catch your attention especially in this area.

That's not the case in southern California where a magnitude 4.7 quake struck the Los Angeles area overnight. An earthquake of that size can do some minor damage. There were no immediate reports of injuries or major damage stemming from that quake.

Small earthquakes aren't unusual in this area. There was a pretty big earthquake in the Plattsburgh area 7 years ago that caused some damage. That was a magnitude 5.
