Meeting in Waterford over PCB levels in water

By: Web Staff

SARATOGA COUNTY, N.Y. -- Saratoga County leaders are concerned about new PCB levels that have just shown up in the Hudson River hours before a dredging project is set to start. The results have community leaders concerned and asking questions.

Town Supervisors in Halfmoon and Waterford say PCB levels near Fort Edward came back at 949 parts per trillion. That's nearly double the safe limits set forth by the EPA. Numbers from Fort Edward from last Thursday came back as 20 to 40 parts per trillion.

The high numbers are being called an anomaly, but the supervisors biggest gripe is with the notification system GE and the EPA are operating under.

"The protocol for monitoring, the protocol for notification, is riddled with the possibility and potential for error. We're not willing to risk people’s health and safety and welfare based on what could be a laboratory error, human error and again, this test is 36 hours old,” said Waterford Town Supervisor Jack Lawler and Halfmoon Town Supervisor Mindy Wormuth.

Waterford and Halfmoon are now operating off of Troy’s water supply as of 6 p.m. Thursday.
