Police postpone search for missing fisherman

By: Dave Detling

TROY, N.Y. -- Police have called off their search for the day for a man they say jumped in the Hudson River Saturday night. Police are looking for Darren LaRose, 41.

They say LaRose was fishing with family on a river bank under the Collar City Bridge before he went into the water. Troy police say they do not expect to find LaRose alive.

"I do not believe that this is a rescue mission anymore, I believe this is a recovery effort. I hope I'm wrong and I guess there's a slight chance that he got out of the water although I don't believe when I look at the conditions that that is the case here. I think we have another unfortunate incident where the river has taken another body here,” said Sgt. David Dean, Troy Police Spokesman.

Police say LaRose had been drinking before jumped in the water. They will resume their search Monday morning. They plan to launch boats from Green Island and the Corning Preserve in Albany.

We spoke with LaRoses' nephew, who was fishing with his uncle at the time. Brian Smith tells us LaRose took off his jacket and shoes and jumped into the water.

"I was kind of shocked when he jumped in. I'm still mad at myself because I didn't tell him, Darren, what are you doing? Swim to shore. Why is this why is that, I just went into total panic shock and it's like I didn't know what to do- but cry," Smith said.
