Busy day for U.S. Postal Service

By: Dave Detling

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- Last minute greeting cards stocked post offices all across the country. It was no different at the Saratoga Springs Post Office on Monday.

"The 15th is always our busiest day," said Julie Haplin, Saratoga Springs Post Office Supervisor.

It works like clockwork every year.

Haplin says, "It's the ten day mark. People procrastinate and they wait until the 10 days and they mail them all out."

Sandra Gehring is one of those postal procrastinators. She's hoping her packages make it to Las Vegas in time for Christmas.

"Well, I'm working part time and I've got a lot of things going on. I just haven't had time to get to the post office," said Gehring.

The U.S. Postal Service says they expect more than 900 million packages and cards to be postmarked. It's by far the busiest day of the year.

"We see all the procrastinators today and we'll see them all week and especially next week. They will find us," said Dee Decoste, a Postal Service clerk.

With cards in hand, Janet Longstaff found her way to the post office. Just don't accuse her of waiting until the last minute!

"No! No! This to me is ahead of the game. I don't feel like I'm late at all," joked Longstaff.

While the long lines and stacked parcels say otherwise, everyone else just want to finish what they've been delaying.

"I take it in stride. I don't think this is bad today. She said we got in the door so that's a positive sign and there's three tellers so where in good shape," said Sarah Watkins.

So with most cards in the drop off box and the rest on the way, it's just another day at the post office, at least until next year’s last minute rush.
