Child safety program at Crossgates Mall

By: Dave Detling

GUILDERLAND, N.Y. -- "Originally we were looking for a winter snow suit for our son," said Sandy La.

But instead she found a safety program inside the mall.

For the sixth year the New York Loves Babies Child Safety Program provided parents with information on keeping their children safe.

"It's not just about babies, it's about tips and activities and helpful hints on raising healthy and happy families," said New York State Office of Child and Family Service Deputy of Communication Susan Steel.

From safer baby bottles, to information on sudden infant death syndrome, the healthy and free information was there.

For families like the Las, this trip to the mall was unlike any other. Instead of a personal shopper they got various information specialists.

"It's interesting because you read all the books and you talk to the pediatricians but it's very nice when you can hear it from the professional who knows exactly what they're talking about," said La.

One of those professionals was Bill Van Alystyne. His child safety seat booth was flooded with concerned parents.

Alystyne inspects car seat installations and says he's amazed at how many parents get it wrong.

"We have to be sure that the harnesses are snug and that the seat belts or the latch system, depending on which system the parent is using, is tight," said Alystyne.

Clarifications like that are exactly what organizers wanted parents to walk away with.

"It's informing them about a wide variety of possibilities and equipping them with strategies and resources to make better, happier, healthier family," said Steele.
