Recession proof biz?
CAPITAL REGION, N.Y. -- You know every time you turn on the TV, you see how the markets are hurting. And as it slows sales for some retailers, those in the bottle business are busy.
"They are coming in here and buying a nice bottle of wine and cooking dinner at home. Some of high end wines are actually selling a little bit better," said Gail Brophy, owner of Purdy's Wine and Liquor.
"If you are going to out to eat, with two people and save, you are more apt to come in and instead of getting a $15 bottle of wine and get a $20 bottle of wine," said Craig Allen, owner of All Star Wine and Spirits.
Both stores, Purdy's in Saratoga and All Star in Latham, said sales are up. And a Wine Spectator industry study is saying wine sales will grow by a little more than a percent this year.

It's just not wine. Suds sales remain strong. The Beer Institute says New York beer buys bounced up a percent and a half in July comparing them to last year.
"We are in a relatively recession proof profession," said Mike Lenz, Menges and Curtis Pharmacy Owner.
The profession is pills and you'll find pharmacist Mike Lenz working hard filling prescriptions. Lenz said his Saratoga pharmacy is still making money in the medicine business.
"One of the last things they tend to give up is their health care, whether it’s going to the doctor or getting their scripts filled," said Lenz.
On the pharmacy's retail side, Lenz said last quarter was healthy. As for the holiday shopping season, right now, he’s holding his breath.
