Dead cats and explosive devices found in Ravena home

By: Web Staff

RAVENA, N.Y. -- Thirty-one cats and more than a dozen explosives have already been removed from a home in Coeymans. Now police and the Humane Society are waiting to see if they can get back inside because they think there could be even more cats there. At least one cat was dead when they entered the home.

Initially, animal control went in at the request of the owners, who said the cats were taking over and they wanted 20 removed. But when they entered, animal control started seeing a variety of explosives and decided to call police.

Police evacuated the area after they found a laser guided rocket and a number of other explosives inside. They say it's difficult to tell exactly what's in the house because of its condition.

The owners told animal control they haven't been able to get in their kitchen for at least a year because cat feces that covers nearly every surface. And while the health department condemned the building last year, the owners were given two weeks to clean it up and this time around, the department will not condemn the building.

"I do know that about a year ago they were here to remove cats and the count then was 29 and I did hear a quote from one of the animal control people who was here last year for the evacuation and they said that this is a hundred times worse and they don't know how it could've gotten this bad," said neighbor Dennis Collins.

Police are still waiting to see what charges will stick in the case. Definitely animal cruelty for the one dead cat, but right now it is not clear about charges related to the explosives.
