TROY, N.Y. -- A Troy man accused in the death of his infant son has been indicted by a Rensselaer County Grand Jury on a murder charge. The indictment was handed up the same day the 4-month-old was laid to rest.

Adrian Thomas, 26, appeared briefly in Troy City Court Friday morning. He is being charged with second-degree murder for the death of his 4-month-old son, Matthew, who died this week at Albany Medical Center.

Matthew was taken to the hospital Sunday with severe head trauma and was taken off life support early Wednesday morning.

In a statement given to police, Thomas admitted to throwing the baby down hard several times while arguing with his wife.

Thomas was originally charged with attempted murder. The case will now be transferred over to county court, and Thomas will be arraigned early next week on the upgraded charge.

The same day Thomas was indicted, funeral services were held in Albany for the infant. Thomas had requested to be able to attend his son's funeral, but the request was denied.

More than 40 people attended the funeral services, which lasted just under a half hour.

We spoke with a family member who said they're all shocked at Matthew's death. He added that he knew it was going to be raining before he woke up Friday morning because "everyone in heaven is crying."
