Mailing scam in Saratoga County
SARATOGA COUNTY, N.Y. -- Muriel True is used to receiving a lot of junk mail. She says she's collecting an entire pile just to prove it. But when she received one particular letter in the mail, something seemed off. After reading the letter True asked herself, "Is this a scam?"
The piece of mail in question came from a New York City based company. It claimed for a onetime fee of $59.95, you would receive a certified house deed. But for True, she had already filed one.
True said, "I was curious about this and when I did open it, as I said, my first thought was, why now?"
So she did a little digging. She immediately placed a call to the local county clerk’s office. They confirmed it was a scam.
Deed and title searchers we spoke with said it's not uncommon, but people can be taken advantage of if they're not careful.

"I don't think the public is aware enough of what's available in the county clerk’s office," said independent title searcher Mary Tiffault.
Services range from copies of documents to certified house deeds. The deeds will only cost $5.
Tiffault says the service is cheap. She said because of that, "there really isn't a need for a separate entity or company to be providing this service for anyone."
As for Muriel True, you can bet she won't be writing out a check to the New York City deed service anytime soon.
True stated, "Why would we send in an application for $59.95 or whatever it was, when we can get it for $5 from the county clerk’s office?"
Now that's a deal everyone should be aware of.
