Cooperstown final Hall of Fame game canceled

By: Mark Repasky

COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. -- Not even Cubs legend Ronnie Woo-Woo could woo the rain to stop.

A sold out crowd of nearly 10,000 fans showed up but never saw the Hall of Fame finale. Sixty-eight years came to a close as the players pulled out. The first pitch never even left the mound.

Some called it a piece of Americana. In a sport marred in scandal, the Hall of Fame game was different. An intimate stadium, a parade to greet the teams and a spot a dad could take his son and still score an autograph, all in the so called birth place of baseball.

“This is about celebrating baseball in a place where baseball lives. You don't get that in major league baseball parks,” said Kristian Connolly, founder of Save the Fame Game. “The games are about statistics, about money, about how many people you can pack into your ball park.”

The league says the decision to cancel the game came because it was too hard for teams to make to Cooperstown. That decision was a blow not only to fans, but to Main Street as well, where the Fame Game day rates second only to induction day.

“I think it's just another way to promote the town, promote the area and promote the sport,” said Tom Disher.

Organizers of Save the Fame Game say they haven't stuck out just yet. They continue their campaign, but so far they have made little ground with the league.
