Governor’s mansion open to public on New Year’s day
ALBANY, N.Y. -- In keeping with a Capitol tradition, Governor David Paterson welcomed visitors into the executive mansion. He and his wife Michelle greeted visitors, who also got to take a tour of the mansion.
Paterson also fielded questions about his choice for a replacement for Senator Hillary Clinton's seat. He responded to Associated Press reports that he was considering appointing a caretaker to serve until 2010, but wouldn't run in the special election. It's a plan he says he's not in favor of.
"I'm actually opposed to that. It would cause New York to lose seniority. And in the United State senate, the most effective senators are the ones who have seniority. So, I'm hoping the person I select wins the primary,” Paterson said.

Governor Paterson also refused to answer any questions about who that person might be. He maintains that he won't make any announcements until Senator Clinton is confirmed Secretary of State.
