In a decision this week, the New York State Court of Appeals upheld that state and county governments acted within their rights when they offered benefits to same-sex couples married out of state. The court held that the government had discretion to do this because it can extend benefits to domestic partners. After an aggressive plan to the tackle the state's used tire problem, more than 26 million tires have been removed. The state's second largest tire dump, Mohawk Tire in Waterford, is now free of old tires. The DEC says 102 of the 146 tire dumps are cleaned up and those not completely free of tires have seen significant progress.
