Annual wired store pops-up in the flatiron district
At the fourth annual wired pop-up store in the Flatiron District, everything seems to have a twist.
The self-portrait timer on the Nikon S60, for example, does not beep out a countdown. Instead, it has a smile sensor. It knows when you're smiling, and that is when the shutter fires.
Then there's the Element4 Watermill, which lowers your impact on the local water supply by feeding water to your home that it takes from moisture in the air.
"Here we showcase products from Wired's advertisers and editorial products; products the editorial staff has selected that people might find interesting, good holiday gifts," says Noah Norman of the Wired Store. "We have everything from a Lincoln to a Harley to a few flat-screen TVs, cell phones, cameras, a refrigerator, mp3 players, and a whole bunch of gadgets in between."

A new section at this year's store is the Green section – designed by Peter Glatzer and "Entourage" star Adrian Grenier.
"He has a new show called 'Alter-Eco,' which features a lot of these products," explains Norman. "In that section, we really run the gamut from a couple different solar-generating devices, a solar flashlight. We have a bike from a company called Deringer that's a gas-powered moped; it's not a motorcycle so you don't need a license, but you'll get 150 miles to the gallon on that. Then we have a couple different types of lamps made from sustainable materials."
Also on display for the kids: a remote-control car that drives on walls.
"It's kind of like the opposite of a hovercraft," says Norman. "It's sucking in air and pulls itself onto the wall or ceiling."
The new toy section also features a remote-controlled spy tank. Drive it around and it will wirelessly send what it sees and hears to a headset.
Nothing is for sale at the Wired Store. It's actually meant to drive consumers to online retailers through the virtual Wired Store at WiredStore.net
