Advocates rally for repealing state's drug laws

By: Web Staff

ALBANY, N.Y. -- Ever since the Rockefeller Drug Laws have been put into place, many have fought for their repeal. On Tuesday, the "Drop the Rock" campaign came to Albany with 30,000 petition signatures to reform our drug laws and rehabilitate drug addicts.

It's been a 35-year long fight, but Governor Paterson says this is the year that the Rockefeller Drug Laws will be reformed.

"We can save our generation and the next generation by recognizing that when laws have not worked, that policies can be changed. Those are our hopes, those are our dreams and I pray that we will never stray from them. This is the year to reform the Rockefeller Drug Laws," Governor Paterson said.

For 35 years, the Rockefeller Drug Laws have put people behind bars for selling or the possession of at least four ounces or narcotics. Offenders were sentenced to up to 20 years in prison and didn't receive any treatment for their addiction.
