Roses deliver smiles on Valentine's Day
ALBANY, N.Y. -- Give a flower, get a smile. And one local group got plenty of smiles this Valentine's Day.
The Kiwanis Club of Delmar partnered up with the Coalition for Change and several local florists to deliver cards and flowers to senior women at several nursing homes. Volunteers made deliveries at five local nursing homes with more than 1,000 flowers, which were donated from local florists.
Organizers say the event couldn't have happened without the help of volunteers and the donations, which were plenty despite the struggling economy. They say based on the response, the first year event was a big success.

"One woman when we knocked on her door and we said Happy Valentine's Day she goes, 'Someone else loves me too.' And I think that's what it's about. Showing people love, showing that you care and that you're thinking about them. And hopefully not just Valentine's Day, we can translate this into other events to let our elderly know we're thinking about them," said City Councilman Corey Ellis.
Organizers say they hope the event carries over to next year and that they hope it's even bigger with the support of more volunteers and businesses.
