COLONIE, N.Y. -- A father and son are facing charges after police said they stole thousands of dollars worth of tombstones from a granite company on Route 9.

Colonie police arrested Demetrius Lanier, 35, of Albany, and his son, Shateek Lanier, 19, of Troy early Sunday morning. They are accused of stealing about $6,000 worth of monuments from Stefanazzi & Spargo Granite Co. in Latham.

Police received a call around 1 a.m. Sunday about a suspicious vehicle at the business. Officers conducted a traffic stop of the rented moving truck and found the tombstones, as well as a claw hammer and a hand cart.

Det. Lt. John Van Alstyne said, "In my 25 years here this is my first tombstone larceny. Speaking with the company, it's been here longer than I've been here, and they haven't had a problem with this before."

The Laniers were charged with felony criminal possession of stolen property and misdemeanor possession of burglar tools. Colonie police said more charges are possible.

The two were sent to the Albany County jail without bail.
