Groups protest Prop 8

By: Curtis Schick

ALBANY, N.Y. -- Protestors march the sidewalks and streets in front of Albany City Hall. Some covering themselves in rainbow flags.

In their hands, signs saying "Equal Right for All" and others simply saying "Love." Hundreds here protesting California banning same-sex marriage.

"It's wrong to legislate hate and not love. Gay and Lesbians are just like their heterosexual sexual counterparts," said Patrick Harkins, Organizer.

At the same time protests going on across the nation. Gay and Lesbian groups organizing a coast to coast call for action after California voters approved Proposition 8.

"I have to speak out as a human. It is a despicable result for that vote. It is not just a gay and lesbian issue, it is a human issue," said Raelene Noll, Protestor.

"In Albany, I'd would love to see marriage equality for gay and lesbians," said Harkins.

Now, in previous attempts Gay Marriage has stalled in the Senate, but with a possibility of a change in leadership there, folks here think there is a possibility for a change in the law here in New York.

"We could be the first state in the whole country to actually pass marriage equality through the legislature and not through the courts, which would be historic," said Ken Zalewski, Troy City Councilman.

Presently, though, Senate leadership remains undecided. Three downstate Democrat Senators are not backing anyone for Majority Leader until January. Two of the three, Rubin Diaz and Karl Kruger, want voters deciding the issue by statewide referendum.
