INTERN PROGRAM

Capital News 9 offers many college intern programs in conjunction with many local universities. The prerequisite for all internships is: an Approved college class, a valid driver's license and successful completion of a drug test.

Marketing / Promotions Department

Promotions Intern:

Internships available in the Fall, Spring and Summer semesters

Scope of Service:

The objective of this position is to create an entry level learning experience for a student seeking college credit in Communications, Public Relations or Television Production.

The goal of this internship is to gain working experience and general knowledge of a Television Promotions department, understand its role in the overall marketing strategy of the station and gain basic understanding of the equipment used within the department.

Tasks include, but are not limited to, logging tapes, copying videos, basic video shooting in the studio, field production of promotional videos, interview-lighting, basic script writing, radio spot productions and general production assistance for the Promotions Producer.

The position will also be responsible for the event management of the Capital News 9 Weather Cruiser, our mobile weather studio. The Cruiser, along with the on-air staff, goes to schools, public events, parades, etc. Running the production of the mobile weather wall within the Weather Cruiser will be a core responsibility of the Promotion Intern. This will require skills such as basic lighting, basic switcher/chroma-key techniques and linear machine dubbing.

A successful intern will need to have a "learning attitude" as News 9 Staff will often teach the skills needed for various tasks within this position. The intern will be working independently at times, and as a team member at others. The work schedule needs to be flexible; however, News 9 will provide the schedule at least one week in advance. The ability to work with the public i.e. school children , elected officials and non-profit organization is essential.

Most importantly, this person needs to be mature, reliable and responsible as this position carries with it a tremendous amount of responsibility which includes the care of broadcast equipment and the overall image/branding of Capital News 9 to the public.

Marketing Communications Associate (200-hour program):

Internships available in the Fall, Spring and Summer semesters

Scope of service:

The objective of this position is to create an entry level learning experience for a student seeking college credit in Marketing Communications, Public Relations, Public Affairs, or Television Management.

The goal of this internship is to gain working experience and general knowledge of a Television Marketing and Promotions department, understand its roll in the overall success of the station and to gain a basic understanding of the marketing techniques used to position a Television Station's brand.

Daily tasks include, but are not limited to:

  • Copying video tapes and dubs for advertisers

  • Scheduling, planning and managing public tours of News 9

  • Distributing press releases to the local broadcast media

  • Basic administrative duties for the marketing department

  • Basic writing and editorial support for the News 9 portion of the TWC newsletter

  • Basic writing and editorial support for the News 9 intranet

  • General assistance in the day-to-day activities of the marketing manager

  • Organization of various market studies and focus groups

This position will also be responsible for scheduling the appearances of the Capital News 9 Weather Cruiser, our mobile weather studio. The Cruiser, along with on-air staff goes to schools, public events, parades etc. Planning the logistics of the cruiser and working with the public on its appearances will be a core responsibility of the Marketing Intern. This will require skills such as telephone etiquette, basic event planning management and a tremendous organizational ability.

WEB DEPARTMENT



Status: Part-time and full-time as required by college credit
Shift: Day shift, evening shift and weekends available

This position is available to any student wishing to earn college credit and first-hand job experience in the field of Communications, Journalism, or Computers. The goal of the internship is to take classroom knowledge, apply it, and expand on it in the "career" field.

The intern/interns will be responsible for copy writing, gathering information on stories through the assignment desk, making beat calls, and searching the internet.

The intern/interns will post stories, and will learn how to add video, and pictures to capitalnews9.com. You will learn the step-by-step process of creating, writing, expanding and approving stories for the web site.

The candidate/candidates need to be mature, reliable, responsible and ready to work. You won't be bored at Capital News 9, and you won't be filing paperwork.

NEWS DEPARTMENT

Status: Part-time and full-time as required by college credit
Shift: Various shifts are available

The News Department offers internships in the following areas:

Reporting


Shadow reporters in the field, write news stories, interview, and assist in the production of news stories

Producing


Shadow producers, write news, work with reporters and anchors to determine story form and content, assemble newscasts

Sports


Shadow sports staff, write sports, monitor and log sports videos and work on videotape editing.

OPERATIONS DEPARTMENT

Status: Part-time and full-time as required by college credit
Shift: Various shifts are available

All operations interns could gather experience in the following areas: Audio/Master Control, Editing and MW/Sat Truck Operations.

Photojournalism


Shadow photojournalists in the field, work with electronic news gathering, lighting and audio and perform non-linear digital editing.

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY/ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT

Status: Part-time and full-time as required by college credit
Shift: Various shifts are available

Interns will be involved in the planning and support of our state of the art technical facility. We have an ambitious schedule of expansion planned. The interns will be involved in planning, documentation, and installation of projects involving expansion of ENG receive sites, deployment of Remote weather stations, additions to the video fiber transport ring, as well as Capital News 9 studio operations.

The aim of the internship program is to provide a system level understanding of a digital video production facility.
