UNITED STATES -- Senator Kirsten Gillibrand is co-sponsoring legislation to crack down on the thousands of people who are illegally taking advantage of a tax credit meant to help first-time home buyers.
The legislation comes after the Treasury Department released a report this month revealing almost 200 schemes and more than 100,000 individual cases of fraud related to the first time home buyer tax credit. This fraud reportedly cost taxpayers more than $100 million.
Senators say to avoid fraud and prevent future misuse of the credit, the program would require more oversight from the IRS.
